Sapelo Square is a digital multimedia platform committed to advancing knowledge about Black Muslims through critical coverage of topics relating to Arts and Culture, Religion, Politics, History, News, and other relevant themes. To learn more about our mission and vision, see our About Us page.

Contribute to Sapelo!
We welcome creative contributions that document, analyze and/or celebrate the experience of Black Muslims. We ask potential contributors to send a pitch for their project first. Sapelo Square strives to be inclusive of the dynamic and diverse Black Muslim community. We take a nonsectarian approach to Islam and an inclusive vision of what it means to be Black. As a result, we welcome diverse viewpoints, ideologies and perspectives. Work shared with us for consideration for publication should not isolate, marginalize, or attack others. Further, we seek high-quality material that is informed and thought provoking. Written pieces are typically 1000-1500 words, but we will consider longer pieces as well. We also eagerly welcome audio, video, and visual contributions.

Interested in contributing but don’t know what? Check out some of our previous work to get a better idea of what we publish:

And, here’s a few things we would LOVE to see more of:

  • Original short stories, poetry, plays, and excerpts of longer creative works
  • Op-eds and think pieces on current events or hot-button topics
  • Profiles of community members and leaders
  • Reviews and reflections (of books, movies, plays, etc)
  • Travel essays
  • Visual art and photography
  • Short films
  • Video and audio performances
  • Graphic stories (comics, cartoons)

Ready? Set. Pitch!

Send your pitch to pitch@sapelosquare.com.

A good pitch typically includes:

  • the topic of your contribution.
  • the medium for how you will present it: written, visual, audio or video.
  • what section you think it is best suited for.
  • why this topic is relevant and timely.
  • a description of your hook (that dynamite opening sentence that will grab your readers attention).
  • why YOU are best suited to address this subject.
  • A brief bio with previous publication links or a non-published work sample.

Fore more on pitching, check out this article from Format magazine.
