(b. 1993, Contemporary Sudanese Artist)
Hani Khalil Jawdat (@paintedbyhani) is a contemporary artist based in Nairobi, of Sudanese origin. He graduated from the University of Sudan in Fine and Applied Arts, where he developed a distinctive artistic voice that intertwines cultural heritage and spiritual exploration.
Deeply influenced by Sufism and dervish practices, Jawdat’s work delves into the subject of the Mahdi’s rule in Sudan, examining historical conflicts between dervishes and colonial powers. His practice is marked by a deep engagement with the concept of trance, which he likens to the rhythmic harmony found in dervish prayers. He describes this state of trance as being like the fluid movements of fish in the sea, following the beat of a drum – symbolizing unity, spirituality, and the quest for transcendence.
Since the beginning of his career, Jawdat has participated in over 32 exhibitions, including solo exhibitions, showcasing his work locally and internationally. He is also committed to social development and community engagement, having facilitated numerous workshops since 2015 that use art as a means of empowerment and dialogue.
Through his thought-provoking works, Hani Khalil Gawdat invites viewers to reflect on themes of identity and spirituality.
