On Thursday, May 7, 2020 Sapelo hosted, “The System: From the ‘Hood to the Hara,” a Sapelo Live with Dr. Marc Lamont Hill. Against the backdrop of COVID-19, this interview digs into the relationship between racism and capitalism from ‘hoods in the United States to ‘hoods across the globe. In the first segments of the conversation, Hill speaks on COVID-19 and breaks down the relationship between white supremacy and capitalism and how the Prison Industrial Complex is produced by and depends upon their alignment. “Hara” is the Palestinian term for ‘hood and in the final segment, Hill discusses his research among Afro-Palestinians and the complex issues of race, identity and occupation they face.
Dr. Marc Lamont Hill is one of the leading intellectual voices in the country. Trained as an anthropologist of education, Dr. Hill holds a Ph.D. (with distinction) from the University of Pennsylvania. Hill has actively worked on campaigns to end the death penalty and to release numerous political prisoners. His current research focuses on the intersections between culture, politics, and education in the United States and the Middle East.
